How to Measure Back Length

This guide is for English style (gp, jump, dressage, etc) and flock filled Aussie stock saddles, it does not apply to Western or Half breed saddles.

English style saddle panels should not be weight bearing/contact the back beyond the last rib.

All our saddle listings give a panel length measurement, this is not a measurement of the entire panel it is a measurement of the part of the panel that is likely to contact the back and be weight bearing. As the horses back shape can alter the point of last contact our listing measurement is approximate. We recommend using it as a guide not an exact number. Often a panel 1cm longer will be ok.

Once you have measured your horse following this guide you will be able to compare it to the panel measurement on our saddle listings.

When looking at listings consider that panel length is not always relative to seat size, some 17.5" saddles could have shorter panels than a 16.5" saddle or a 16" saddle could be bigger than a 17" saddle.

Remember the seat fits the rider and the panel fits the horse!

We have a step by step printable guide & video showing how to measure.
